I Loves Me Some Twitter

So some of you may have read The Tweet I sent yesterday.  If you didn’t see it, don’t bother looking.  I deleted it.  To give you a hint of what it said, before I sent it I sent this:

first

And right after The Tweet, I sent this:

second

The Tweet was profanity-laden and not very complimentary – to Ellie or, quite frankly, to me.  But I needed an outlet.  I needed it to get out there so someone would actually hear it, because sometimes if nobody hears you it just isn’t the same.  And I didn’t think the neighbors really needed to hear it.  So, well, hi Twitterverse, it comes to you!

Not surprisingly, I got a reply tweet.  I love feedback, but for some reason this woman’s reply really got to me.  It was seconds after I sent the original, and she said:

reply

My first thought was, “Fuck you!”  Then my insecurities took over.  While I was annoyed with the “lot of people unfollowing you” bit, I was really disturbed about the “I’m upset for your 5 year old” comment.  I shouldn’t let that get to me, but, well, instead of getting to bed at a reasonable hour my brain ended up getting all wound up and I deleted The Tweet.

Fortunately, as the evening went on, some very cool people tweeted me back and made me feel better (sorry if I missed anyone).  @SarcasticMomLC pointed out that if they unfollow me for a single tweet then they weren’t my kind of people.

Thank goodness I’ve got “my kind of people” following me too.  <drunken slur>  I love you guys! </drunken slur>

We love you too. I’m glad we could be here to deflect such rage from your 5-year-old. What would you do without us. Besides, show me ONE parent who hasn’t had that exact thought at least once in his/her child’s youth.

  2. I highly doubt it was worth the ugly response you got.

You know, funny thing was that I never even saw the original tweet. I don’t know if I was still putting away groceries or something, but by the time I had a look, all I saw was the follow up stuff.

I used to get REALLY upset about stuff like this. It’s taken me quite some time to come to terms with the idea that people who I don’t know will follow me thinking they know what I’m about, and inevitably, they don’t. Then I will say something that is just “me” and they’ll get offended and unfollow. I guess I wish everyone could dig my chili, but since they won’t, I guess I just hope that the people who do like tweets about farts, booze, and titties will find my Twitter stream.

Hell, you did. ;-) And I’m glad!

  3. Jennifer says:

I’m wondering why she was so upset for your five yo anyway… Does she not get that you vented to the internets INSTEAD OF to your 5yo? Helllllloooooo…

  4. Erica says:

Aww. I didn’t think anything about your pre-Tweet tweet or The Tweet except good on you for venting to us instead of to your momentarily-exasperating child (ALL children have exasperating moments, and ALL parents should have the presence of mind to find a way to decompress, like you did, without fear of reprisal). Then, when I noticed the deletion, I felt awful that you’d had to do the horrible dance of internet backtracking. That’s never fun.

  5. EcoMeg says:

Dude, don’t listen to the haters. You’re a great dad!

  6. PUHLEASE! We all think it from time to time. Kids are awesome and wonderful and rainbows might even shoot out there ass. But they also suck the big one on occassion. Pfft, I don’t think your tweet was wrong. I think it was healthy. Get it out before it explodes out at the child.

  7. Marla says:

If one tweet gets you unfollowed or pittied…I should by wallowing in
a pool of sorrow in the corner alone, rocking back and forth, back and
    forth. back and….
Good for you for venting. Better
    on Twitter right?!

  8. Taylor says:

I’d like to say it will get easier to deal with her. But as a woman I know that would be a lie. Just wait until angsty, rebellious teenager phase.
